Azienda Speciale Palaexpo, Roma, Italy
The Azienda Speciale Palaexpo (ASP) is a not-for-profit, public corporation
belonging to and controlled by the City of Rome. It was founded in 1997 with the
purpose of managing Palazzo delle Esposizioni, an 1883 historical building designed
by Pio Piacentini, which is one of the city's major exhibition venues and cultural
centers. ASP also runs the Scuderie del Quirinale, another key exhibition venue in
Rome, thus creating one of the leading poles of integrated cultural services in Italy,
with Palazzo delle Esposizioni devoted mainly to multicultural languages and Scuderie
del Quirinale to classical art and old masters painting and sculpture. This institutional
structure allows ASP to pursue its main mission, which is to diffuse and promote
knowledge and understanding of visual cultures, performing arts, history, and
science through the organization and production of exhibitions and related events
(symposiums, conferences, music and film programs), that focus on different and
faraway historical and cultural contexts.
The Palazzo delle Esposizioni reopened to the public in 2007 after an
extensive renovation that created three different exhibition areas, two auditoriums,
children's labs, a 'forum' area and commercial spaces, which allow for multiple
and flexible programming that serves broad and diverse audiences, whether
individuals, families, members of the learning community, or experienced professionals.
Palazzo delle Esposizioni with Codice Cultura recently presented the
successful exhibition Charles Darwin 1809-2009 (Feb 12 - May 3, 2009). Traveling
the Silk Road will run at Palazzo delle Esposizioni, in the main exhibition area,
from November 2012 to March 2013.
ASP is led by a Director General, Mario De Simoni, and is administered
for the public benefit by a Board of Directors.

settlement and welcomes the opportunity to collaborate with the American Museum
of Natural History on the Traveling the Silk Road exhibition" says Craddock Morton,
Director of the National Museum of Australia. "The story of the exchange of ideas,
knowledge, religions, and goods that flowed to and fro along the Silk Road for
millennia will deepen our understanding of the significance of an intriguing
chapter in world history."
The National Museum of Australia explores the land, nation, and its
people through its rich and diverse collections, exhibitions, and a dynamic
forum of discussion and reflection.

being brought to Australia from the American Museum of Natural History. Art
Exhibitions Australia is delighted to be participating in these major partnerships,

The National Museum of Natural Science, Taichung, Taiwan
The Silk Road is a household name in Taiwan and every school child has some
understanding of the Silk Road from their history classes. Over the last decade,
there have been Silk Road-related exhibits in Taiwan, such as the Dunhuang's cave
art exhibit developed by the National Museum of Natural Science in 1999 and the most
recent one from Xinjiang which was completed in May 2009. But most of these
exhibits examine the Silk Road from the perspective of the arts. After learning
that the American Museum of Natural History is working on a Silk Road exhibition
that places more emphasis on the technological innovations along the major cities
on the journey, the National Museum of Natural Science decided to join the
project and become a collaborator with the goal of shedding new light on this
well-known historical trading route weaving it into the current context of
globalization, and bringing a new understanding of the Silk Road to its audience.
